NP-Neuro Critical Care in New Orleans NIGHT SHIFTS
Job description
Start date: as soon as credentials are issued
Support & Coverage:
- Team: Nursing, RT, NCC attending, +/- additional APPs
- Schedule: 3 night shifts/week
- Census: 10–20 adult Neuro ICU patients (seen based on acuity)
- Patient Population: Adults (>18) with primary neurologic diagnoses
- Unit: Closed Neuro ICU with 24/7 APP coverage, neurointensivist support (daily rounds + overnight phone)
- EMR: EPIC at Level I trauma, academic research hospital
Skills required:
- Manage patient admission, treatment, discharge, and documentation (H&P, consults, progress notes, discharge summaries).
- Conduct rounds, direct care per protocols, initiate referrals/consults, and provide patient education.
- Perform wound care, debridement, dressing changes, I&D of superficial abscesses, minor procedures, and suture/drain removal per surgeon direction.
- Insert/remove NG tubes, bladder catheters, and perform venipuncture and immunizations.
- Deliver critical care including ventilator management, hemodynamic monitoring, sedation/analgesia, and emergency airway support (e.g., bag mask, LMA).
- Demonstrate working knowledge in neuro and critical care topics including: stroke management, neuroimaging, EEG, ICP, seizures, neurotrauma, ventilation, electrolyte/acid-base balance, infection, anticoagulation, cardiac arrest, and brain death assessment.
Preferred Skills / Special Procedures:
- Perform CVC and arterial line insertions, lumbar punctures.
- Implement SAH, ICH, and AIS pathways; document stroke core measures (LKW, Hunt & Hess, ICH Score, NIHSS).
- Manage complex neurosurgical post-ops (e.g. craniotomy, craniectomy, cranioplasty, transsphenoidal resection, spine surgery, stenting, aneurysm clipping/coiling).
- Recognize neurocritical emergencies on head CT; interpret CXR and ECG.
- Maintain accurate and timely documentation, including med recs, family and social histories.
